Awareness: The Key to Black Mental Health by Dr Naim Akbar

An increasing amount of rhetoric and discussion accompanied by a decrease in effective programs have come to characterize our orientation and attack on economic, social, political, and psychological problems of African people within the confines of the United States of America. Unfortunately, it has become more fashionable to offer extensive Marxian or other such impressive but distant theoretical descriptions of the problems confronting our people than it has been to provide relief from the economic blight still faced by a growing (yes, growing) number of black people. Drug use, Black—on—Black crime, suicide and other symptoms of social - emotional unrest increase despite the resounding cries of "Beautiful Black," how "together" we are, what the "honky" has done, is doing, or will be doing to us. The essential problem is that we have not followed through logically or practically on the awakening of the sixties during which an awareness began to surface of the dynamics of our condition in this country and in other parts of the world.

Black psychologists and professionals in other mental health fields have decried the application of inappropriate norms to the assessment of our problems. With few dissenting votes, we have condemned things such as IQ tests, personality inventories and other measures of psychological characteristics as inappropriate and destructive to our well—being. We have condemned white researchers and mental health workers as unqualified to define and provide solutions for the morass of problems which confront us. At the same time, we have so far failed to come forth with viable alternative solutions, which take into account our increased awareness of our condition in this country along with our true and historically legitimate characteristics as African people.

Let me assume that all of us have heard the basic arguments that have been put forth against the traditional conception of mental health problems. For those who are not aware let me recommend Black Rage by Grier and Cobb, and Dark Ghetto by Kenneth Clark as early attempts to analyze the mental condition of the black people of this country. The error made by these accomplished black scholars is that they redefine the cause and character of the mental health problems confronting our communities within the traditional context of Western psychology including its emphasis on pathology in their assessments. These social Scientists fail to fully accept a proposition implicit in their works - that most of the basic tenets of psychology have grown out of the attempts that Western men have made to understand the mental problems which occur within and as a consequence of their environment. The two premises that render such notions inappropriate to the problems of Blacks are:

(1) We are Africans (i.e., non-Western) in our basic dispositions; and

(2) the quality of our environment (by the mere factor of oppression) is systematically different from the environment which Western writers use as the point of departure for understanding their condition.

John Orley in Culture and Mental Illness, Freud in Civilization and its Discontents , and many other Western theoreticians have espoused the notion that mental illness is the price paid for "social development" or increased "civilization." The assumption here again is that increasing civilization and meaningful social development are directly proportional to the degree to which a people come to resemble the people of the Western world in their interactions, manners and concerns. In fact, though, these writers unwittingly provide a warning to people of the world that a pervasive backdrop of real pathology lies within the constructs of what is revered as Western culture. American racism in its most insidious and sundry forms is only one of many symptoms underlying the insanity, which characterizes the Western world. This fact alone represents the certainty of mental disorder for African people who find themselves in a social setting controlled and maintained directly or implicitly by Western people. This style of black disorder is what I have referred to in an earlier paper as "white psychopathy." "White psychopaths" are black persons whose familial and cultural experiences have so duplicated the modal white experience in this country that they have in fact developed a Western consciousness which disposes then to markedly similar disorders as those experienced by Euro-Americans within their cultures. Most of the neuroses as we know them in America are unknown in cultures with limited contact with European values. Disorders such as female frigidity, sexual perversions, and extreme anxiety are essentially unknown in cultures with drastically different value systems and social organizations.

The treatment implication for Blacks with emotional problems of this nature is two-fold. On the one hand such individuals probably represent a sample of people who have systematically denied their disposition as African people. Secondly, these "patients" have overly identified with the wider cultural milieu to the extent that within their minds they have become Euro-Americans. To assist people suffering from such problems, it is necessary that we understand the nature of the Western mind which makes then vulnerable to such disorders and the characteristics which African people have assimilated leading them to the development of similar disorders. I suggest to you that one of these characteristics is the Western notion of individuality, which denies the interdependence of self and others. The idea that each person should "do your own thing" is an attitudinal construct which moves us away from the necessary control of our behavior by our own communities. There is no doubt that much of the distress experienced by black people today has to do with their passionate attempt "to do their own thing" and their discovery (often too late) that they have no "thing" to do. The priority value for any social group is the "thing" which assures the survival of that group first and secondarily the individual as a member of that group. It is no wonder that a growing group of middle-class black women have lost the innate disposition of sexual responsiveness. Many of these women have defined their "own thing" as the degree to which they can look, act, and feel like Elizabeth Taylor, Racquel Welch or other such models of white aesthetics. It is no wonder that we become depressed to the point of suicide if our growing preoccupation is the extent to which we have out performed our neighbor in a competitive situation which was without meaning or substance to begin with. There is growing evidence that the increase of suicide among black people is directly proportional to the extent to which those people have identified with the Euro-American value system which emphasizes the autonomy of the individual while simultaneously attributing all blame to the individual.

Treatment for disorders such as these must rely on expanding the individualistic consciousness. The concept of consciousness is derived from the Latin phrase con scio, which means "with knowledge." The helping person must concentrate on expanding the personal awareness and knowledge of the individual to better appreciate the aspects of the self, which are being denied in their attempt to follow faulty models. Those who are familiar with traditional methods of counseling and psychotherapy will recognize the proposition presented here as similar to the goal of most traditional counseling. This recognition is accurate. Implicit in the notions thus far presented is the idea that to the extent to which we have identified with Western people, we have also come to share much of their condition. Some of the methods, which have proved "effective" in the alleviation of that condition for them may, with appropriate modifications, be used in the alleviation of problems which we have developed because of our assimilationist attempts. An example of this proposition lies in the analogous introduction of venereal disease on the African continent by Europeans. Antibiotics are the treatment of choice for such a condition despite the fact that the origin of these diseases is based on the cohabitation of Africans and Europeans. We might extend the analogy by suggesting that although antibiotics may be effective in alleviating this unfortunate physical malady, Africans might have been protected from this disease had they the knowledge and been able or willing to protect themselves from the kind of contacts which led to the initial development of such conditions.

In other words, I am suggesting that the traditional methods of increasing self-awareness by psychotherapy and counseling must be supplemented by systematic and structural instruction about the nature and acceptance of self. The parroting of European values and behaviors must be replaced by what a close friend and eminent colleague, Dr. Phillip McGee of Stanford University, has called the " restoration of African consciousness." The limitations of this discussion will not permit a full elaboration of this concept but it essentially challenges us to better understand and adopt those communal values and dispositions which underlie the survival of our people who, by all Western notions of physical and mental strength and endurance, should not have survived - but did!

Oppression Disorder

A second general classification of mental health problems of African people includes those disorders that are direct products of a colonialist system of oppression. I recommend the major works of Frantz Fanon (1963, 1967) for an exhaustive description of the dynamics of these ailments. Briefly, these are disorders which represent the self-defeating but adaptive attempts to survive in a society that maintains a system which renders your physical survival (when it occurs in conjunction with your basic African disposition) almost impossible. The pimp who maintains the African disposition of masculine assertiveness and flamboyance may become a sadistic brute and colonialist-like exploiter of his community. He is struggling to actualize these characteristics in a society that has defined the concept of masculinity as inconsistent with blackness and self-confidence as "nigger" arrogance. The junkie searches for an escape from a system that begins with a definition of him or herself as zero and systematically subtracting from them all factors that might increase their self worth. The junkie then attempts to sustain this form of escape through devices of theft, murder and indiscriminate destructiveness. The system then responds by perpetuating, (free of charge) the absence of consciousness called addiction while curtailing the detrimental by—products. Consequently, although the junkie’s awareness of self may be their most valuable asset in group and personal liberation, they are fed a solution like methadone which makes them safe, though asleep.

There is much to be learned by a critical analysis of the work of one of the most effective social change and therapeutic agencies for Blacks in this country , i.e., the Leadership and Organization of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. Regardless of the philosophical or ideological differences one might have with the Nation of Islam, we must recognize that Elijah Muhammad has accomplished with his followers what the "sophistication" of all Western technology, psychology and theology has failed to accomplish. The most superficial components of Elijah Muhammad’s teachings for the resolution of mental health problems within this category have to do with knowledge of self and self-help. The Muslim woman who recognizes and receives respect commensurate with the worth of a glorious black woman is incapable of becoming a prostitute. A junkie who has committed himself to the building of a nation based on equality, freedom and justice for himself and his kind (even by such a simple act as selling newspapers on a street corner) has no place for the "sleep" afforded by drug addiction. The alcoholic is unable to flood his body with poison when he or she believes in the essential beauty and worth of that body.

In other words, I am suggesting that the key to treatment of this wide range of disorders (which represent attempts to escape self) lies in the basic acceptance of self and vehicles for the maintenance of self. Giving methadone to an addict with no job or job skills to provide for himself and those he loves is like putting out a fire with gasoline. Let’s be very clear that I am not referring to token programs that seek to rehabilitate by teaching basket-weaving when everyone uses plastic bowls. We are suggesting here that clear-cut procedure for the development of self-reliance must be provided. It is important to recognize the service needs of the communities where we live (and let us keep in mind that there is no end to the flight of whites from sharing of environments with Blacks) and prepare people to fulfill these needs. There are basic necessities from the provision of food and shelter to the manufacture and maintenance of technology that we must learn to depend upon ourselves to obtain. From entertainment to the reeducation of our children, after they have been subjected to a day’s worth of programming from the public schools, can be provided by the systematic training of many people who we have given up on because of their attempted escape by the use of drugs, prostitution, alcohol or other methods of self-destruction. The key here is that people who know themselves will love themselves and, if permitted, take excellent care of themselves.

Organic Disorders

I shall not spend extensive time on these conditions of universal occurrence. These disorders are primarily caused by physiological disorders within the occasional biochemical mutations of nature. We must, however, be ever cognizant of the interaction of the physiological with the psychological and of the psychological with the social. High blood pressure has been shown to have a markedly low rate of occurrence among people who have control over their basic life processes and who effectively manage their diets. As the pressures of urban living increase and the vehicles for alleviation of these pressures (such as the availability of jobs) decrease, the hypertension and many similar disorders show a marked increase. Many of the psychoses and especially "true" schizophrenia are increasingly being demonstrated to have biochemical bases. (I make a distinction here between what is in fact a basic disturbance in organizational and perceptual processes based on a biochemical imbalance and the unique behavioral patterns - such as paranoid adaptation, which I have discussed elsewhere - based on attempts to cope with an untenable and hostile environment). In such instances let us be made aware that most of the chemicals for the alteration of consciousness came out of African Science and spiritual practices, and the use of herbs and other forms of plant life to correct chemical imbalances. The difference between African administration of these drugs and the indiscriminate use of drugs by the Western medicine man is the Western emphasis on behavioral modifications rather than alterations of consciousness. The witch doctor applied his chemicals along with systematic re-education and community involvement as the treatment of choice for disorders of this nature. Family therapy is a recent arrival in the Western package of treatment for mental illnesses. Traditional African healers always engaged the entire milieu of the identified "patient" in the treatment process. Consequently, even in instances where the disorder can be identified within the somatic make-up of the individual, the person’s re-involvement with their social group involves not only their individual treatment but a cooperative re-socialization within the known and identified social group.

One additional example may further substantiate the point being made here. Senile psychosis and depression are described as natural deterioration of the nervous system -a function of the aging process. It is interesting to note that these disorders in Blacks have increased in incidence as our treatment of our aged has come to parallel the Western man’s treatment of his aged. As we remove our old people from the on-going living process by depositing them in tombs for the living (called "old folks homes"), we also initiate the deterioration processes which take on physiological characteristics. With the loss of meaning and activity of the mind, the body succumbs to death.

Even in situations where the available knowledge suggests that the disorder is one of physiological origin, we must be in tune-with the critical variables that bridge that artificial Cartesian dichotomy of mind and body. We must be ready to cross that connecting bridge without an overemphasis on either mind or body.

An underlying dictum throughout this discussion is the importance of sensitive diagnostic differentiation. Essential to understanding and treating mental disorders of African people (and all other people for that matter) is a sensitive ability to differentiate what is a condition of the environment; what is a condition of the individual; and what is the nature of the interaction between the two. This is the first step toward the classification and consequent application of treatment procedures to a particular disorder. The implication here is that the mental health worker must begin with sensitive self-knowledge that frees him from the biases of imposing an irrelevant theoretical conception on a reality that he does not understand.

Conclusion

This discussion formed on three basic assumptions about the mental problems of African people within the U.S.A.:

(1) the basic dispositions of African people differ from the basic dispositions and values of Europeans;

(2) the condition of oppression accounts for a wide range of mental disorders among African people; and

(3) deliberate attempts hamper knowledge of self (i.e., of group and environment) are the dynamic basis of mental problems among African people. Based on these assumptions, from a sensitive understanding and diagnosis of mental disorders, the treatment of choice becomes an initial effort to increase the individual’s knowledge of himself and his kind. An understanding of the system of oppression (awareness) is the hallmark of making systematic attempts to alleviate the condition of oppression and in turn, the behavioral consequences thereof.

The most insidious device working against effective correction of mental disorders is the naivete of the mental health practitioner. Again let me refer to traditional African society where the healers were widely informed members of the tribe, not only in terms of the secrets of healing but in self- understanding and knowledge of the philosophical underpinnings of the tribal organization. This is a training that was passed down from father-to-son or mother-to-daughter, implying a need for lifelong skill and personal development. The ineptness of most contemporary mental health workers is a greater cause of ineffective treatment than any other single force.

African-American men are more than twice as likely to be unemployed as white males while earning 74% as much per year. Unemployment for black men was 9.5 percent, as compared to 4 percent for white men.

Black men are nearly seven times more likely to be incarcerated, with average jail sentences about ten months longer than those of their white counterparts.

Black males between 15 and 34 are nine times more likely than whites to be killed by firearms.

Black males are nearly eight times more likely than whites to suffer from AIDS.

After attending elementary school, blacks “begin to fall behind on standardized tests.” (President Bush’s heralded No Child Left Behind). The Urban League reported that in fourth grade blacks perform at a level of 87 percent of whites. By the time they reach twelfth grade, their scores are at 74 percent of whites.

By high school blacks are more likely to drop out—15 percent, as compared with 12 percent for whites.

According to the Tennesean Census data shows that 71 percent of black graduate students are women.

65% of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of the 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. (Guess the people leading the pack)

I am beyond angry.... Shaniya was 5 and how she met her end is..... F*cked UP!!!!
Shaniya's mother faces charges of child abuse including prostitution, filing a false police report, and human trafficking. Authorities allege that Shaniya Davis’ mother, Antoinette Davis sold her daughter to Mario Andrette McNeil. McNeill is reported to be the ex-boyfriend of Antoinette’s sister. After surveillance video showed Andrette McNeil carrying Shaniya Davis into a hotel, he turned himself in to authorities. He has been charged with first degree kidnapping. He is expected to plead not guilty to the charges.
I have a solution, me and the parties involved left alone. I will not kill them but I bet they wish I would.

Theodore Roosevelt won the award in 1906 and Woodrow Wilson won in 1919. Former President Jimmy Carter won the award in 2002, while former Vice President Al Gore shared the 2007 prize with the U.N. panel on climate change.

Life has been odd lately and the ride has only changed it's technicolor stripes.

After two dozen (24) Emmys, the beloved show that has been on the air for 26 years is no more.
I am bummed because I like shows that push education and I firmly believe that instead of euthanizing a program because it "does not fit" into the popular pedagogic fade. PBS should revamp it and slide in phonics and other devices that could help children understand the basics of language.
If anyone touches Sesame Street, I will personally throw the first molotov cocktail.

SEX OFFENDERS

Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy, will face 29 felony counts after being accused of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard when she was 11 and keeping her in their backyard since 1991.
In 1977, Garrido was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison for kidnapping and from five years to life on a state charge of sexual assault after the case was heard in Washoe County District Court, said Suzanne Pardee, spokeswoman for the Nevada Department of Corrections.
Garrido started his federal prison sentence on June 30, 1977 for transporting a victim over the state line and was turned over to Nevada authorities on Jan. 22, 1988to serve state time, he was paroled in 1988...
I am a firm believer in tagging these guys like National Geographic.. Lets put a biochip in their body and set so that law officials can stop by without a warrant.

Curious Case of Michael Jackson

Before I go any further I have to say that the Governor Mark Sanford needs to be flogged... Stoned to near death and water board administered. Not for his sexual indiscretions because he is human, his crime is J.V. Martin Junior High. You remember Ty’sheoma Bethea, the child that wrote about the horrid conditions of the school.. While this child was in a school two steps below most non industrialized nations Mark was going to Argentina for a tryst on tax payers' dollars while schools that could use money rot.. That is child neglect and for that Mark Sanford you deserve some sort physical discomfort.

Michael Jackson is no longer with us and I feel wierd because he is one of those people that is immortal. I am tired of hearing about Mike's legal problems. Use to be that if you were aquited that was it... He was found not guilty by a group of less pigmented people.. It is not like he married his adoptive daughter or drove some unfortunate soul down Chappaquiddick alley. Mike was a character but if you look at the great musicians of the past they all were of kilter... Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's behavior is described as being erratic.. Mike had his faults like any other HUMAN and we must remember that..

The other day I heard a young woman of African heritage proclaim in a loud voice that she is not African/Afro american... She stated that she is an American and decided to add the biggest confusion that she should be referred to as Irish American since here other ancestors came from Ireland... She was serious. I must be honest and state that I do not see myself as an american, be it Afro, African or what ever the powers may be want to label. I am a person behind enemy lines.... Obama's election may not add up to much as long as parenting skills remain low among some people as I saw today when a mother told her child to act right or she will beat here ass.... The child is three and the mother added some more explenitives. This is not an isolated incident.
I avoid labels as much as possible and do not embrace the devil (whatever costume or color)

Obama's good fortune in education comes from a mother that is a seasoned travel or,meaning she actually saw the world and understood it's complexities. Obama experience this as weal. Also the school Obama attended was no light weight either.It is a top private school (Punahou School) in Hawaii. Meaning Barry is not a byproduct of public education. In 1979, the year Obama graduated, tuition for high school students at Punahou was $1,990, a sizable expense compared with Hawaii's median family income of $22,750 that year. In other words public school system has been on the decline and the majority of black children are not fortunate enough to have the dividends to pay for a first rate education or have sanity in their life.

It has been said that this year was the first time a major political party in the United States nominated a woman or a Black person as its presidential candidate. For women, that is true, but some historians say Barack Obama will not be the nation's first Black president. They say he certainly won't be the first president with Black ancestors--just the first to acknowledge his Blackness.

Which other presidents hid their African ancestry? Well, it's not Bill Clinton, even though the Congressional Black Caucus honored him as the nation's "first Black president" at its 2001 annual awards dinner. Presidents Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge all had Black ancestors they kept in their genealogical closets, according to historians.

Harding did not deny his African ancestry when Republican leaders called on him to deny his "Negro" history. He said, "How should I know whether or not one of my ancestors might have jumped the fence?"

Does African ancestry make these men Black? If the bar is the one-drop rule, then yes. The one-drop rule is a historical term used during the Jim Crow era that defines a person with one drop of sub-Saharan-African ancestry as not white and therefore must be Black. If that's the bar, then there have already been other Black presidents, says historian Leroy Vaughn, author of Black People and Their Place in World History.

The first president with African ancestry was Jefferson, who served two terms between 1801 and 1809. Jefferson was described as the "son of a half-breed Indian squaw and a Virginia mulatto father," as stated in Vaughn's findings. Jefferson also was said to have destroyed all documentation attached to his mother, even going to extremes to seize letters written by his mother to other people.

President Andrew Jackson, the nation's seventh president, was in office between 1829 and 1837. Vaughn cites an article written in The Virginia Magazine of History that states Jackson was the son of an Irish woman who married a Black man. The magazine also stated that Jackson's oldest brother had been sold as a slave.

Lincoln, the nation's 16th president, served between 1861 and 1865. Lincoln was said to have been the illegitimate son of an African man, according to Vaughn's findings. Lincoln had very dark skin and coarse hair and his mother allegedly came from an Ethiopian tribe. His heritage fueled so much controversy that Lincoln was nicknamed "Abraham Africanus the First" by his opponents.

President Warren Harding, the 29th president, in office between 1921 and 1923, apparently never denied his ancestry. According to Vaughn, William Chancellor, a professor of economics and politics at Wooster College in Ohio, wrote a book on the Harding family genealogy. Evidently, Harding had Black ancestors between both sets of parents. Chancellor also said that Harding attended Iberia College, a school founded to educate fugitive slaves.

Coolidge, the nation's 30th president, served between 1923 and 1929 and supposedly was proud of his heritage. He claimed his mother was dark because of mixed Indian ancestry. Coolidge's mother's maiden name was "Moor," and in Europe, the name "Moor" was given to all Blacks, just as "Negro" was used in America. It later was concluded that Coolidge was part Black.

There are moments in time when I get emaotional and this one of them. The lady in the picture is Amanda Jones and she is the daughter of a slave... No lie, Amanda is 109 and I am in awe of this Black Madona that binds us to a time forgotten. . Her vote for Obama is much more than a symbolic gesture. I am mad at myself for being consume with idlenesss when I was in Texas because Ms. Jones would of had me knocking on her door with majestic offerings that are suited only for royalty.

After a point the debate change my opinion on the process of choosing a president. When the only candidates we see is two parties. This is not a democracy, far from it!!!

I believe we need to select a candidate the same way religious officials appoints a living god.
Lets have a panel of judges conduct a series of ancient ceremonies to select the goddess (president) from several 2- to 4-year-old girls (in this case a person that is legal age for candidacy) who are all members of the impoverished Shakya goldsmith caste (in the US those that are of sound character).

Election time is around the corner and the only thing I got is helium. Nothing but sound bites - stop corporate greed, I new Iraq was wrong, like my fellow maverick, change..... blah, blah blah.
No one was ballsy enough to say everything I had plan is shot; Iraq we're stuck and so are the contractors; The homeless and the real poor not suburbia needs help;the old concept winning a war is not feasible and ultimately we want your soul; America produces only debt nothing else, everything is made abroad.
Lets string those rich blood suckers of the poor up by heels and treat them like the leader of Italy Benito Mussolini. Two parties and not one made feel fuzzy inside.
I am waiting for the pride of Alaska and the poster child for Tourettes to battle it out.
I somewhat do agree with Kenya's son that change comes from the bottom up. It is not through the leadership in the community. The president becomes who his cabinets members are. Bush is an exception but you cannot fault a special needs kid.
Vote to have more than one party to be a participant at the debate. Why is it we very seldom see a third party. Better yet let some of the third party candidates help moderate the debate.
Prepare people because a new day is on the horizon and it is not in our favor.

I am not telling you to vote for anyone because that is your choice. What I am encouraging is that you are true if you choose to do so. Do not vote for Obama because he is black or against for the same trivial reason. Do not vote for McCain because you think his VP is cute or against because you think he is to old or the VP pick is dimwit. Vote with reason that only makes sense to you. I have had people tell me that votes for Obama will save the black race... Considering technically he has no obligation to any black folk here since he is second generation immigrant from Africa... I am not promoting McCain or the pit bull with lipstick either. There was racial stereotyping at an election rally by a Republican group calling itself a "Values Voter organization", an arm of the so-called Christian Evangelical Family Research Council. A box of Obama waffle mix going back to the old stereotyping of Aunt Jemima was being sold for 10 dollars apiece at their conservative political forum.
The boxes depict Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap. So I have heard....

There are other parties such as Green Party & the Libertarian party and if they speak to you vote that way. Just vote were it makes sense to you and if you decide to vote against Obama because (you believe) he is a Muslim in disguise then.... Well not much to say about that.

I am still undecided because no one truly speaks to me except Biden and it is not for politicks. I saw a video of him after his wife and year-old daughter were killed in an automobile accident leaving him with two sons to raise . He stated that he will quit his senate job if it conflicts with his family time. To me that speaks volume. I am not sure because I am still thinking.

Once again the court system fell short in keeping a child molester in jail. Aaron Mohanlal molested a seventh-grade boy. What confuses me is that the judge granted Aaron Mohanlal a rare bond that allows him to remain free while his case is tried on appeal, a process that could take years.
And there was evidence that Mohanlal was grooming other children. One middle-schooler told police that Mohanlal rubbed his arms and back during class; another testified at trial that his teacher gave him his cell phone number, money and hair conditioner.
What is sick is that the court order to stay away from his victim did not include other kids.. In other words this sick individual can move freely among children...
What is said is that the father is asking the court for a logical explanation when he should have exerted that energy for the eradication of that sick "sob" If that child was mine the court would not have to worry about justice and to be hones I believe the judge behaved like this in order to get justice right... If the child was mine then Mohanlal would learn what hell is... When we fail to protect our young then we doom our future...

Sixteen states, including storm-ravaged Mississippi, took the items. However, CNN discovered that those items were given to the 11 state agencies, schools, cities and fire departments rather than being distributed to residents trying to rebuild their homes.

Leaders of nonprofit groups helping Katrina victims were astounded when CNN showed them photos of the FEMA supplies. All said they were unaware that such supplies were available.

Man Beats Toddler TO DEATH

In California a man savagely beat a child to death for reasons that are unknown.. This is so mind numbing that I had to copy and paste the story.... Unfortunately Sergio Casian Aguiar (the man that killed the child) was fataly shot. I am sure that some bleeding heart is going to say this person has rights and that THE POLICE DEPARTMENT should have taken a more humane approach in order to understand his plight... For them they can screw a tree... This man deserves hell in the most sadistic form..... I am for peace but harm a child then I want some sort of blood vindication...

TURLOCK, Calif. (AP) -- Police killed a 27-year-old man as he kicked, punched and stomped a toddler to death despite other people's attempts to stop him on a dark, country road, authorities said.

Investigators on Sunday were trying to establish the relationship between the suspect and the child they say he killed Saturday night. The Stanislaus County coroner said the boy appeared to be between 1 and 2 years old based on his size, according to county sheriff's deputy Royjindar Singh.

"It's been a long night of wondering, 'Why?' - not only for the officers and the passers-by who stopped and tried to help out, but for anyone. Why would somebody do this?" Singh said.

Singh said the coroner does not plan to confirm the identities of the suspect and victim until Monday. Because his injuries were so severe, the child will have to be identified through a blood or DNA test, he said.

The suspect had a child's car seat in the back of his four-door pickup truck. The truck caught the attention of an elderly couple at 10:13 p.m. Saturday because it was stopped in the two-lane road facing the wrong direction, Singh said.

As they got closer, the couple saw the man brutally beating the toddler behind his truck and throwing the child on the ground, according to Singh. Two or three other cars stopped, an unusual number to be passing through the remote area surrounded by a dairy, a cow pasture, a cornfield and a farmhouse, he said.

"What we got from witnesses is he was punching, slapping, kicking, stomping, shaking," Singh said. "They tried to intervene and get involved, but their efforts really didn't have an effect. The suspect was engaged in what he was doing. He just pushed them off and went back to it."

A sheriff's helicopter responding to emergency calls from the area landed in a cow pasture at 10:19 p.m. carrying a Modesto police officer who shot the man to death after he refused an order to stop beating the child, Singh said.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the toddler, who was not breathing when they arrived. The boy was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No children within the dead boy's age range have been reported kidnapped or missing in Stanislaus County, Singh said.

The incident happened on Bradbury Road about 10 miles west of Turlock, a city located about halfway between Sacramento and Fresno.

There has been so much madness that it is hard at times to keep positive. I have found a story that offsets the turmoil the seems to plaque the media.
Chad and Keri McCartney can claim that their daughter (Macie Hope McCartney) was literally born twice.
The first birth was about six months into Keri's pregnancy, when surgeons at Texas Children’s Hospital took their daughter partially out of Keri’s womb to remove a tumor that would have killed Macie before she was born. The head surgeon Head surgeon Dr Darrell Cass said that the tumor was the size of a grapefruit.
The second birth took place May 3 and Macie is doing fine.
It is stories like this make you believe in miracles and that there is gold at the end of the rainbow.

BBC Radio 4 (9/20/05), Iraqi police sources in Basra told the BBC the "two British men were arrested after failing to stop at a checkpoint. There was an exchange of gunfire. The men were wearing traditional Arab clothing, and when the police eventually stopped them, they said they found explosives and weapons in their car…It's widely believed the two British servicemen were operating undercover."

Allegedly materials to produce explosives were found in their vehicle... What were to Brits doing in Arab country dressed like the locals with materials for explosives?? Someone sent me this video and it was interesting. I agree that somethings need be done in the black community but I am not calling for an extermination of anyone. I agree that people are killing themselves with toady's dietary choices and various other gadgetry that individuals have been convinced they need. Codependency has become the new crux. WE as a people need to elevate our minds. If we do not the plantation will continue to govern. We're in the same boat.. Scare tactics keeps us at each others throats. Only a small band of people are governing the fate of this world and they are not going loosen that grip of control. Lets stop rocking the boat and work towards saving our children and ourselves....
Watch the video and you come to your own solution. For me "kill whitey" is not the solution.. They are lost as well, remember there are only a handful that set this atmospher for disaster and they want you to divert your energy were it is less affective...

We all remember the lie of 2000 election and I guess some people do not know the face that should go with this debacle. I decided to do a post about lovely Ms. Harris and bring to our attention that snakes such as herself are looming in the garden always. We just have to pay close attention. It is also nice to know that any of her political ambitions was shut down in a hail of scandals or as I call it "karma". To further grasp what type of person she is check out what she said to the Florida Baptist Witness on August 24, 2006,
“We have to have the faithful in government and over time, that lie we have been told, the separation of church and state, people have internalized, thinking that they needed to avoid politics and that is so wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers. And if we are the ones not actively involved in electing those godly men and women and if people aren’t involved in helping godly men in getting elected then we’re going to have a nation of secular laws. That’s not what our founding fathers intended and that’s certainly isn’t what God intended. … we need to take back this country. … And if we don’t get involved as Christians then how could we possibly take this back? …If you are not electing Christians, tried and true, under public scrutiny and pressure, if you’re not electing Christians then in essence you are going to legislate sin. They can legislate sin. They can say that abortion is alright. They can vote to sustain gay marriage. And that will take western civilization, indeed other nations because people look to our country as one nation as under God and whenever we legislate sin and we say abortion is permissible and we say gay unions are permissible, then average citizens who are not Christians, because they don’t know better, we are leading them astray and it’s wrong.”

Today kids look to Tupac as if he was a revolutionary... He was shot for being foolish and not for being some Black Messiah. The words of Prophet Martin Luther King and El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz have been swept under the carpet of Lazarus.. Put away the gadgets that have dumb the youth down and read to them.. Take away the balls and put a chess board in front of them. Make sure your kids reach a rung on the ladder you never reached and push them to go further. The other day I ran across a story about a Memphis High School that posted a dance at their school under the moniker "Rape Dat Ho". The kids were engage in something that can only be called procreation without thought. I do not place the blame on the kids, if they were never taught any civility then how can they learn. I blame the parents and the school administration.. When kids conduct themselves inappropriately then the faculty should step in.. Regardless if the Principle suspended any of the kids is a mute statement. They (the kids should of been stopped from the get go. End Of The School Year

I have completed another school year as the proverbial step child (substitute teacher). The problem with education is that the system wants a test to gage a child. Unfortunately the teacher is limited to what he/she can do. What happens is regurgitation. Basically if a child has a good attention span they can ace any exit exam. The teacher basically teaches the exit exam. The reason why this exam is important to the teacher is because their job depends on it... If the results are not there then that teacher will not be there the next year. No field trips or anything that stimulates the grey matter.
The last days of school I showed "The Great Debaters" and sadly I had to put the fear of me in the in order to get them to watch the movie.. Oh I had one class that could not tell me were Fisk University is...The sad thing we live in Nashville.

Florida teen posted on YouTubes that she had been raped and no justice has truly been met. According to Orange County authorities charged a 23-year-old man Crystal accused of assaulting her with lewd or lascivious battery. According to court documents, Crystal and the man both said they had an ongoing sexual relationship. The reason for them not pursuing the case is because Crystal was a month shy of being 16 when it would be "legal to give consent". In other words because she is so close to the age were she could have sex with whomever she chooses the accusation of rape is irrelevant. Regardless if they had sex, the moment no is uttered then it becomes rape. The comments posted to her youtube post is appalling and not worth repeating. Watch the video and you judge for yourself...

Couple years back a teacher was severely reprimanded for using the infamous "N" word. Paul Dawson, told student Keysean Chavers to sit down.Shortly afterwards somewhere in the exchange Nigga/Nigger was used towards the student. The problem is that Keysean is saying Paul initiated the exchange and Paul's story points the finger at the student. Me personally I am siding with the teacher on this one and I do believe he (Paul Dawson) should have been suspended for not thinking. What I find offensive is that they have a perverse slant on this story. That word is used frequently among black students including "honor students" without thought. When I have asked these kids how would you feel if someone white referred to them in this manner they informed me that they get upset and would inflict some type of bodily harm on that person. Again I wonder what happen to the black youth when they degrade each other without knowing. It appears that the progress that was made in the sixties has mslowed to a snail's crawl today. Do not refer to Obama as proof we are moving forward a politician is just that. Besides we just have to see how much he loves black when he is in the Oval Office. Parents teach your kids is all I am truly trying to stress...

I have not posted lately due to prior comitmits but I could not let this person slide by without responding. I Am Not for The MLK Holiday blog post I recieved the following comments:

if you were conserderd your feeling for the MLK Holiday, theyre wouldnt be any holidays you fool! maybe you should take an American Lit class and learn a few things b4 you try and comment on facts and issues you do not know...the holiday is a step to cast light upon the struggle of blacks not to undermine! if there was no holiday then that would undermine even more!----with your opinion "Good luck with life" my advice to you is to think more an a broad level! see several points of view then examine them all chose one and also compare b4 you go writing blogs and sites =)

This what I have to say to Annonymous:
First I am not the one needing "American Lit" and I am not sure what sort of knowledge I would get from a class about authors of North America (Canada excluded) Second, I spend most of my time with kids that compose there sentences in the same manner as you. I admit that that my grammar skills are not the greatest but I can formulate a good sentence which I believe an American lit class could help. I am not for the holiday because it becomes an excuse or a hollow statement for something much powerful. School is out and for what??? Blacks are coming up short in every category which I have posted in that particular post. Time and time again kids that I have ran across are lost and the holiday is not helping, matter of fact I hear more kids blaming whites for their problems when they should look in the mirror. Yes racism and other discriminatory factors are in place BUT there are ways around this. Instead of shutting down the schools hold a black study vigil in his honor. Lets not march, instead lets bum rush the school board show up in numbers. Lets do a hostile take over in our community shut down the crabs that keep pulling us down. I am a fool??? No, I beg to differ for it is you that remains the blind sheep being lead to the slaughter. The struggle of blacks you say well visit a resource class or some other form of higher special education and you will find black youths falsely imprison a statistic training facility. You will find young kids of Kemet being pumped full of kiddie cocaine and pedagogical poison. I am God incarnate as is everyone that chooses intellectual light is. I have read your post and the actual truth you prove me right in the fact that MLK day is in vain by responding in some cryptic unintelligible language. What sort of education did you have? If we want to honor MLK or any other individual that gave their life's blood to the enrichment of my people then it should be done through education which if you gander at the statistics our kids are not.

I am not trying to justify what that group of individuals did because I do not know of their practices first hand. When a person calls for help that is a red flag. Cults come in different shades Christianity, Islam and Juadism were at one time considered cults along with many mainstream religions some are welcomed while others are demonized such as Scientology. I do not condemn either of the ones mention because what works for one may not work for another.

Spelling Bee were a kid had to spell negus. According to Webster the word is a title in Ge'ez, Tigrinya, Tigre and Amharic, used for a King and at times also a vassal ruler in pre-1974 Ethiopia and pre-1890 Eritrea. Grant it the word has a cool meaning but when you say it aloud well it just comes off wrong. I just want to know who was the one stuck on stupid that decided this word should be in the competition. Marion Jones' Teammates Lose Medals

We all know about Ms. Jones and oddly I cannot get that song out of my head. Seriously thanks to her juicing her relay team from 2000 Sydney Games have to relinquish their medals as well. WOW!!! Is all I can say, it amazes me how people become blind to the repercussion that their actions may cause. Jones' teammates were Jearl-Miles Clark, Monique Hennagan, LaTasha Colander-Richardson and Andrea Anderson on the 1,600-meter team. Chryste Gaines, Torri Edwards, Nanceen Perry and Passion Richardson were on the 400-meter squad.
If one of her teammates pull a Luco Brazi I will not be surprise. With that in mind Marion get your passport...

real-life superhero

I have been made sick with all the craziness in the media. While browsing for some sanity I ran across what is term "real-life superhero". They are real people playing super hero while wearing some sort of costume that relates to their hero persona.... NO LIE!!!!! At first I was laughing hysterically and then it hit me after I read Super Hero Manifesto (http://www.supersquad.org/?page_id=16)... I was feeling better after reading about Capital City Super Hero Squad.

Oddly enough I agree with Captain Prospect when he said "Of course it was a harsh reality to grow up to discover there are no real superheroes or superteams. Perhaps it’s ridiculous that I held on to these childhood dreams of superheroes that were so obviously fantastic characters of fiction." Quite possibly in some Freudian manner my drive for becoming an educator stems from my child obsession with super heroes. Regardless of my own self absorbed psychoanalysis these guys made me feel good that there are some people out there doing some good.
